¿Qué son los determinantes?

      Determiners are words used in front of a noun to make it clear which exact thing the noun is about.

Los determinantes son palabras que se utilizan delante de un sustantivo para dejar claro a qué se refiere exactamente el sustantivo.

Take a look at this sentence:

Fíjate en esta frase:

The cat slept.

El gato dormía.

The is a determiner. It means we're talking about one specific cat.

¡El es un determinante! Significa que estamos hablando de un gato específico.

We could also say:

También podríamos decir:

A cat slept.

Un gato dormía.

A is a determiner too!

La A también es un determinante.

We could even say:

That cat slept. This cat was awake.

      A, the, that, and this are different types of determiners.

So, determiners are words that help you determine what a noun is about.

1. Definite Article: The

"The" is one of the most common words in the English language.

      Use "the" when talking about a specific one of something.

For example:

I went to the bathroom.

I saw the doctor.

He visto al médico.

      You can also use "the" to refer to something you talked about earlier.

También puedes utilizar "el" para referirte a algo de lo que has hablado antes.

I started reading Harry Potter. The first book is great.

      "The" is called a definite article.

Tip: The word definite means exact, or well-defined.

Now, what if you don't want to talk about an exact bathroom, but just any bathroom? 🙉

You would use another type of determiner - an indefinite article.

Se utilizaría otro tipo de determinante: ¡un artículo indefinido!

2. Indefinite Articles: A, An

'A' and 'an' are the only two indefinite articles in the English language.

A y an son los dos únicos artículos indefinidos en la lengua inglesa.

      Use the indefinite articles 'a' and 'an' when talking about something for the first time, or when you're nonspecific.

Utiliza los artículos indefinidos a y an cuando hables de algo por primera vez, o cuando no seas específico.

For example:

Por ejemplo:

Is there a bathroom here?

¿Hay un baño aquí?

You don't care that it's the exact right bathroom. You just need a nonspecific bathroom!

No te importa que sea exactamente el baño correcto. ¡Sólo necesitas un baño no específico!

Here's another example of the indefinite article an:

He aquí otro ejemplo del artículo indefinido an:

I want an apple.

Quiero una manzana.

      Demonstratives explain how far away a noun is

      This, these, and here are demonstratives that show something is near.

This bat and these balls go here.

When something is far, you can say:

That bat and those balls go there.

      That, those, and there are demonstratives that show something is far.
