So far, we've learned that verbs can show actions.

But not all verbs show actions.

For example, you learned about linking verbs.

They describe the subject without showing an action:

In this lesson, you're going to learn about another kind of verb that doesn't show action.

What Is a Helping Verb?

¿Qué es un verbo de ayuda?

      A helping verb does not show action. Instead, it helps another verb show action.

Un verbo de ayuda no muestra la acción, sino que ayuda a otro verbo a mostrar la acción.

For example:

The dog has found a bone.

El perro ha encontrado un hueso.

'Has' helps the verb found show action.

'Has' ayuda al verbo encontrado a mostrar la acción.

The squirrels have eaten some nuts.

Las ardillas han comido algunas nueces.

Has and have are helping verbs.

Has y have son verbos de ayuda.

Is, are, and am, are all present tense forms of the same verb, be!

Using Is, Are, or Am

Uso de Is, Are o Am

      Use 'is' for singular subjects, and for the pronouns he, she, and it.

Utiliza "es" para los sujetos singulares y para los pronombres él, ella y ello.

Mary is singing.
He/She/it is singing.

María está cantando... Él/ella está cantando.

      Use 'am' for the pronoun I.

Usa 'am' para el pronombre I.

I am singing.

Estoy cantando.

      Use 'are' are for plural subjects, and for the pronouns you, we, and they.

Utiliza 'son' son para los sujetos plurales, y para los pronombres vosotros, nosotros y ellos.

The students are singing.
You are singing.
We are singing.
They are singing.

Los estudiantes están cantando... Tú estás cantando... Nosotros estamos cantando... Ellos están cantando.

Tip: Helping verbs always come before the main verb.
