What Are Sentences?

A sentence is a group of words that tells a whole story, or complete thought.

Key Point:

Parts of a Sentence

Every sentence has a subject and a predicate.

Key Point:

We rode our bikes to school.

'We' is the subject

The subject is what the sentence is about. It's a noun.

Key Point:

The predicate is the rest of the sentence that's not the subject.

Key Point:

Every predicate has a verb that tells what the subject does or is.

Run!

Yes! ✅

Sentences can be just one word long. That word will be a verb, and the subject is implied to be "you".

Four Types of Sentences

The four types of sentences are statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.

Statements tell about something and end with a period.

Key Point:

Questions ask something and end with a question mark.

Key Point:

How cold is the water?

Commands tell you to do something.

Key Point:

Eat your vegetables.

Exclamations show excitement and end with an exclamation point.

Key Point:

Watch out!

Tip: Some sentences are both exclamations and commands.

Word Order

️️ The order of words in a sentence matters. It has to make sense.

Key Point:

Does this sentence make sense?

Derek finished his homework after dinner. ✅
Boy sitting at desk working on his homework.

Yes.

How about this one?👇

Derek homework after dinner finished his. ❌

Nope, that sentence makes no sense. 😹

So, we see that word order matters.
