In this lesson, let's learn about three ways to move, or transform, a shape. 

En esta lección, vamos a conocer tres formas de mover, o transformar, una forma.

The ways are called translation, reflection, and rotation.

Las formas se llaman traslación, reflexión y rotación.

Translation

Traducción

Look at this triangle.

Mira este triángulo.

Now, imagine that you slide the triangle on the surface of this screen.

Ahora, imagina que deslizas el triángulo sobre la superficie de esta pantalla.

      Sliding a shape from one position to another, is called translation.

Deslizar una forma de una posición a otra, se llama traslación.

In translation, all points on the shape move the same distance, in the same direction. 

En la traslación, todos los puntos de la forma se mueven la misma distancia, en la misma dirección.

There is no rotating, resizing, or anything else, just moving. ✅

No hay rotación, ni cambio de tamaño, ni nada, sólo movimiento.

Reflection

Reflexión

Let's use the same triangle.

Usemos el mismo triángulo.

This time, let's flip the triangle about the dotted line shown below, so that it moves to its new position, and appears backwards.

Esta vez, vamos a voltear el triángulo sobre la línea de puntos que se muestra a continuación, para que se mueva a su nueva posición, y aparezca al revés.

      Flipping a shape is called reflection.

Dar la vuelta a una forma se llama reflexión.

The line about which a shape is reflected is called the line of reflection, or the axis of reflection. ✅ 

La línea alrededor de la cual se refleja una forma se llama línea de reflexión o eje de reflexión.

👉 All around us, we can see reflections in mirrors and in water.

Let's look at our triangle one more time.

Veamos nuestro triángulo una vez más.

This time, let's imagine that you turn the triangle around a fixed center.

Esta vez, imaginemos que se gira el triángulo alrededor de un centro fijo.

When you stop, the triangle will have moved to a new position, and it would have turned a certain angle, such as 45°, 90° or 180°.

Cuando te detengas, el triángulo se habrá movido a una nueva posición, y habrá girado un determinado ángulo, como 45°, 90° o 180°.

Here, the triangle was rotated 110° around the point marked "X".

Aquí, el triángulo se ha girado 110° alrededor del punto marcado con una "X".

      Moving around a fixed point is called rotation.

El movimiento alrededor de un punto fijo se denomina rotación.

👉 Some more examples of rotation are shown below. The "X" marks the center of rotation.

👉 In real life, we can see rotations in the hands of clocks, in merry-go-rounds, and in pinwheels.
