How to Flip, Slide, and Turn Shapes

Have you ever tried to put together a jigsaw puzzle?

puzzle

To solve these puzzles you have to:

- Flip the pieces over,

- Turn them, and

- Slide them around.

Let's learn to flip, slide, and turn shapes on a grid.

Grids

We'll draw shapes on a grid like this:

grid

Let’s start by putting a letter on this grid.

F on a grid

There are three ways we can move this letter. 😺

Slide

The first movement is a slide. 👉

slide F on the grid

You’ll notice the letter has moved. It’s in a different place on the grid now.

slide F on the grid

Nothing else about the letter has changed. It still looks like a normal F.

Flip

Another movement is the flip.

Flipping F

Each flip has an imaginary line that you flip over.

It’s like flipping a card over, or folding a piece of paper.

Turn

The last movement you might see is a turn. 👉

turn F on the grid

Turning the letter is like spinning it.
