How to Add 1-Digit and 2-Digit Numbers Without Regrouping

One-digit numbers are the numbers between 0 and 9.

Key Point:

In the last few lessons, you learned to add one-digit numbers, like this:

3 + 4 = 7

You also learned to add two-digit numbers, like this:

10 + 30 = 40

Key Point:      Two-digit numbers are the numbers between 10 and 99.

Now, let's learn to add one-digit numbers to two-digit numbers. 😺

Adding One- and Two-Digit Numbers

Let's learn with an example:

31 + 7 = ?

First, write the equation in column form!

Yes, you'll be using column form a lot in math. 🙉😂 It's super useful.

Tip: Write the two-digit number on top.

31 +

Then write the one-digit number.

31 + 7 in column form

Tip: line up the digits, so we can add correctly!

The 7 goes under the 1, not the 3.

Next, we add column by column, starting with the Ones column.

31 + 7 in column form. Ones solved: 8

We write 8 in the Ones place below the answer line.

Since there is only one number in the Tens column, we just bring it down.

31 + 7 = 38 in column form.

Our final answer is 38. Great job!

Let’s try another example.

90 + 3 = ?

Start by writing the column form:

90 + 3 =

Next, add the Ones digits, then the Tens. Can you do it in your head?

Yes! You get 93.

Great job learning to add one- and two-digit numbers. 😺

Now, complete the practice. You'll learn more and remember for longer.
