Let's learn how to tell if a subtraction equation is true or false.

True or False?

Here's a subtraction equation:

3 - 2 = 1

The equal sign means what's on the left should be the same as what's on the right.

Key Point:

To decide if an equation is true or false, we look at both sides.

3 - 2 = 1

An equation is true if both sides have the same value.

Key Point:

One side says "3 - 2". The other side says "1".

We know that:

3 - 2 is 1

and

1 is equal to 1

✅ So, this equation is true!

Both sides have the same value, 1.

Another Example

Is this equation true or false?

4 - 1 = 2

Just follow the same steps!

👉 First, look at both sides.

4 - 1 = 2

We know that:

4 - 1 is 3

but

3 is not equal to 2

❎ This equation is false!

The two sides are not the same.

Let's try one more example:

5 - 1 = 7 - 3

Start by looking at both sides.

5 - 1 = 7 - 3

The left side shows 5 - 1.

5 - 1 = 4
5 - 1 = 7 - 3

The right side shows 7 - 3.

7 - 3 = 4
5 - 1 = 7 - 3

4 equals 4!

✅ This equation is true!

The two sides have the same value.
