      Words ending with a vowel and two consonants usually have a short vowel sound.

      'th' is called a consonant digraph, which means it's two consonants that make one sound.

Tip: Even though the words 'both' and 'bath' both end with 'th', the 'o' in the word 'both' is long, while the a in 'bath' is short.
