In an earlier lesson, you learned that a noun is a word for a person, place, or thing.

En una lección anterior, aprendiste que un sustantivo es una palabra que designa a una persona, un lugar o una cosa.

Now, take a look at this story about the noun Jasmine.

Jasmine wanted ice cream so Jasmine went to the store. Jasmine was having a party.

We said "Jasmine" 3 times.

Sounds strange, right?

Sometimes we don't want to repeat the same noun over and over again.

That's why we use pronouns, like he, she, and it.

What Are Pronouns?

      Pronouns take the place of nouns.

Los pronombres ocupan el lugar de los sustantivos.

We can replace "Jasmine" with the pronoun "she," like this:

Podemos sustituir "Jazmín" por pronombres como éste:

Jasmine wanted ice cream so she went to the store. She was having a birthday party.

Jazmín quería un helado y fue a la tienda. Tenía una fiesta de cumpleaños.

Pronouns help us tell better stories.

      The most common pronoun is it.

El pronombre más común es it.

You can use it to replace things.

ball = it

toy = it

pencil = it

Personal Pronouns

Pronombres personales

      Personal pronouns replace names of people.

Here are some personal pronouns:

Example: Andrea is funny. She is funny.

Brad was on time. He was on time.

The kids went to the zoo. They went to the zoo.

When to Use He, She, It, or They

ellos

      Use the pronouns he, she, or it to take the place of one person or thing in the subject of a sentence.

Ejemplo: Los niños fueron al zoológico. Fueron al zoológico.

For example.

nosotros

Sally was happy. She won the prize.

Ejemplo: Mi familia ha cenado. Hemos cenado.

There is just one Sally, so we replace Sally with "she."

      Use the pronoun they to take the place of more than one person or thing in the subject of a sentence.

Utiliza los pronombres él, ella o ello para ocupar el lugar de una persona o cosa en el sujeto de una frase.

Let's look at an example
