      Grammar is the study of the rules of language.

La gramática es el estudio de las reglas del lenguaje.

Learning grammar is important. It helps you speak and write well.

Aprender gramática es importante, ya que ayuda a hablar y escribir bien.

Usually, we speak to each other in sentences.

Normalmente, nos dirigimos a los demás con frases.

     ️ A sentence is a group of words that tells a whole story. We call it a complete thought.

️ Una frase es un grupo de palabras que cuenta una historia completa. Lo llamamos un pensamiento completo.

Parts of a Sentence

Partes de una oración

      Every sentence has a subject and a predicate.

Toda frase tiene un sujeto y un predicado.

Take a look at this sentence:

Fíjate en esta frase:

We live on a farm.

Vivimos en una granja.

The subject is the noun "we".

El sujeto es el sustantivo "nosotros".

The predicate is the rest of the sentence. It tells you what the subject does or is.

El predicado es el resto de la frase y dice lo que hace o es el sujeto.

Is this a sentence:👇

Es una frase:

work on a farm

trabajar en una granja

That's not a sentence! It doesn't have a subject! We don't know who or what works on a farm.

¡Eso no es una frase! ¡No tiene sujeto! No sabemos quién o qué trabaja en una granja.

Starting Sentences

Frases iniciales

     ️ Every sentence starts with a capital letter.

️ Todas las frases empiezan con mayúscula.

Do you see how we started the sentence with "We" and not "we"?

¿Ves cómo empezamos la frase con "Nosotros" y no con "nos"?

Ordering Words

Palabras de ordenación

     ️ The order of words in a sentence matters. The order has to make sense.

️ El orden de las palabras en una frase es importante. El orden tiene que tener sentido.

Does this sentence make sense?

¿Tiene sentido esta frase?

Sarah ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch.

Sarah almorzó un sándwich de mantequilla de maní y jalea.

Yes!

¡Sí!

How about this one?👇

¿Qué te parece este?

lunch Sarah peanut butter and jelly ate.

almuerzo Sarah mantequilla de maní y jalea comió.

Nope, that sentence makes no sense. 😹

No, esa frase no tiene sentido.

So, we see that word order matters!

Así, vemos que el orden de las palabras es importante.

Ending Sentences

Frases finales

     ️ Every sentence ends with a special mark, called a punctuation mark, like: 

️ Cada frase termina con una marca especial, llamada signo de puntuación, como:

?, !, or .

., !, o .

     ️ The most common punctuation mark, "." is called a period.

️ El signo de puntuación más común, ".", se llama punto.

Each punctuation mark makes a different type of sentence.

Cada signo de puntuación constituye un tipo de frase diferente.

There are 4 types of sentences you use all the time. 😺

Hay 4 tipos de frases que se usan todo el tiempo.

1. Statements

1. Declaraciones

      Statements end in periods. They tell about something. Here are some statements:

Los enunciados terminan en punto y hablan de algo. Éstos son algunos enunciados:

I like cake.

Me gusta el pastel.

The sky is blue.

El cielo es azul.

Most sentences are statements.

La mayoría de las frases son afirmaciones.

2. Questions

2. Preguntas

      Questions always have question marks. They ask for more information.

Las preguntas siempre llevan signos de interrogación. Piden más información.

Do you like cake?

¿Te gusta la tarta?

What is your favorite color?

¿Cuál es su color favorito?

3. Exclamations

3. Exclamaciones

Exclamations always end with exclamation points. Use them when you're excited about something.

Las exclamaciones siempre terminan con signos de exclamación. Úsalas cuando estés emocionado por algo.

This cake is great!

¡Esta tarta es genial!

The sky is beautiful!

¡El cielo es hermoso!

4. Commands

4. Comandos

Commands end with a period. We use them to tell someone to do something.

Las órdenes terminan con un punto. Las utilizamos para decirle a alguien que haga algo.

Eat your cake.

Cómete el pastel.

Choose a color.

Elige un color.

Now you know that sentences have two parts (subjects and predicates).

Ahora ya sabes que las oraciones tienen dos partes: sujetos y predicados.
