Sentences are made of different sentence parts.

Las oraciones se componen de diferentes partes.

One part every sentence has is a subject.

Una parte que tiene toda frase es un sujeto.

     ️ The subject of the sentence is the person, place, or thing that is doing something.

️ El sujeto de la frase es la persona, el lugar o la cosa que está haciendo algo.

Alex rode the horse.

Alex montó el caballo.

Alex is the subject. He's the person who is doing something.

Alex es el sujeto. Es la persona que está haciendo algo.

The dog barked at the cat.

El perro ladró al gato.

The dog is the subject.  

El perro es el sujeto.

The dog barked. Barked is the verb. 

El perro ladró. Ladró es el verbo.

A sentence is incomplete if it does not have a subject.

Una frase está incompleta si no tiene sujeto.

subió al árbol

What climbed the tree? We don’t know because the subject is missing.

¿Qué subió al árbol? No lo sabemos porque el sujeto ha desaparecido.

Let’s rewrite the sentence with a subject.

Reescribamos la frase con un sujeto.

The squirrel climbed the tree.

La ardilla se subió al árbol.

Adding a subject to the sentence makes it complete. 

Añadir un sujeto a la frase la completa.
