What Are Standard and Expanded Form?

Math is all about numbers. There are a few different ways we can write numbers.

Las matemáticas tienen que ver con los números, y hay varias formas de escribirlos.

One way is using digits like this:

Una forma es utilizar dígitos como estos:

      When we write numbers using digits, that's called standard form.

Cuando escribimos números utilizando dígitos, eso se llama forma estándar.

      A comma goes after every third digit from the right. 

Una coma va después de cada tercer dígito desde la derecha.

Another way to write numbers is using word form.

Otra forma de escribir los números es mediante palabras.

128,364 in word form is:

128.364 en forma de palabra es:

One hundred twenty-eight thousand three hundred sixty-four

Ciento veintiocho mil trescientos sesenta y cuatro

We can also write numbers in expanded form.

También podemos escribir números en forma expandida.

What Is Expanded Form?

This is the place value table for 128,364:

Each digit has a different value.

Cada dígito tiene un valor diferente.

The digits on the left (👈) are worth more.

Los dígitos de la izquierda valen más.

You can write 128,364 as the sum of the value of each digit:

Puedes escribir 128.364 como la suma del valor de cada dígito:

128,364 = 100,000 + 20,000 + 8,000 + 300 + 60 + 4

128,364 = 100,000 + 20,000 + 8,000 + 300 + 60 + 4

The value of the number is still the same. We just expanded it.

El valor del número sigue siendo el mismo, sólo lo hemos ampliado.

This long way of writing a number is called the expanded form.

Esta forma larga de escribir un número se denomina forma expandida.

Turning Expanded Form Into Standard Form

We can put these into a place value table. 👇

Tip: No value was given for the Ten Thousands place, so we write "0" there.

Our sum, written in standard form, is 9,704,158. ✅

Tip: Don't forget to put commas after every 3 digits, starting from the Ones digit.
